How to Help Your Tween Design Her Bedroom!
SHE CAN ABSOLUTELY DO IT WITH YOUR HELP

WHERE WE STARTED
Come along with us on our girls bedroom transformation. When we moved into our new construction home in early 2020, literally less than two weeks before…well, you know. My daughter was due for an upgrade to her room. She got her own room, and it was much much bigger than any she had ever had before. We did some very basic decor and used what we had to start. She wanted hearts, so we repurposed a canvas and I painted her some pretty basic heart artwork and I ordered a stencil and painted hearts on the wall behind her bed. She chose the colors, light purple and black, I executed what I could with what we had.

THE NEXT STEP – THE PAINT
The budget was tight for this girls bedroom transformation. We gathered some marketplace and thrift finds over the next year and transformed her room for her birthday. She still wanted black and purple, so I got swatches from Lowes, and we hung them all over her room for a few weeks until we decided on which ones to get samples of. I guided the initial color choices to avoid the totally obnoxious shades that kids think they want. But once it came down to the final choice it was all her, And even though we had worked together to get down to the final choices, I was skeptical of her final color pick. But it turned out AMAZING. With a little guidance, and a reminder of their final goal, it can turn out great without a bunch of fighting. Promise.
HELP HER IDENTIFY WHAT SHE WANTS
We did not have an inspiration picture for this space, but you can absolutely build a Pintrest board of girls bedroom transformation inspiration rooms to help guide the decision making process. We are currently doing this for my daughters next room design. Helping your daughter identify which aspects of each room she likes, and making a list in notes on your phone can also be super helpful! She liked the white curtains, and she liked the canopy bed, and she wants lots of shelving or lots of fairy lights, etc. Then you can take that list and figure out what you can do with your budget and what you need to thrift and search Marketplace for.

PRODUCT SOURCES
The rug was Amazon, the curtains on her Marketplace bed came from Roses. The bedding Amazon, dresser Marketplace, lamp on the dresser was Dollar General clearance. Desk was free from somewhere, and chair was Walmart. We made the heart mobile, she painted all of the hearts herself and I assembled it. The white curtains are IKEA and they’ve been all over my house for years. The green lamp was a thrift find.
THE SWING
The swing was the easiest yes. It’s actually way easier to hang something from the ceiling than most people realize. Some Cotton rope, wood, batting, fabric, and a staple gun make it super easy to put it together. Find the joists, predrill some holes, and screw in heavy duty eye hooks. Then you thread your rope through the eye hooks and the holes in the board. Are your joists are running the wrong direction or just aren’t quite in the right spot? Anchor a 2×4 between the closest joists and place the swing where you want it. It really is that simple. Her room is perfect for a swing! Post coming soon on the actual logistics on this. And we have other swings in much smaller spaced in our home, you don’t have to have a big room to have a swing. This is how her room stayed for a while.

THE ‘FINAL’ VERSION
We added some artwork, and an expanded gallery wall. We also switched the swing out for one of those acrobatic swings, and made it more her. She’s getting ready to redesign it for her young adult years as she is turning 17 this year. But this room has been a real sanctuary for her for the last 4 years. I’m sure the next version will be just as good but I’m going to miss it.

We hope her room transformation brings you inspiration for your own daughters room!
Happy Decorating!
