How we keep Gluten Free Food labeled and Separate.

If you have Gluten Free people and Gluten people in your house…
You know the challenge that it can be to keep things separate and cross contamination limited. We don’t have Celiac in our home, but we do have significant sensitivities to gluten and dairy. We don’t have significant reactions to cross contamination so we do have gluten and gluten free foods in our home to help keep costs down. And that means, we have to keep things labeled and separate. So we do have a cabinet in the pantry that is for the Gluten Free foods, and if I decant something out of a box, the label gets cut off and put in the box with it. But leftovers and our jars in the fridge were a bit harder to figure out.
Things we have tried
We have used the labels that dissolve, they were too expensive to use long term and did leave a residue. We have used dot stickers, but they don’t come off easily after they’ve been in the fridge. My kids wrote on a few containers and that was not going to work because we do not have dedicated containers.
What Actually Works
I finally landed on something we already had around the house, our stash of colorful masking tape. It comes off easily immediately or after the fridge. Even if it goes through the dishwasher it doesn’t fall apart and we can easily take it off and throw it away. If we need to write a name on it or label it otherwise we can. It’s a fantastic, multi use product that is saving our life in the kitchen and pantry.

We keep a roll of masking tape in the drawer with the parchment paper and such, along with a sharpie in case we need to mark something specific on the tape. Otherwise if it has tape on it we know it’s GF/DF.
Cheers!
