HOW TO STORE YOUR KIDS LEGO

THE PROBLEM

This is a common parent problem. You want to let your kids play and imagine and build. AND you don’t want to step on Lego.Because OUCH! But HOW do you find the happy medium. You need a Lego storage solution.

THREE SOLUTIONS

THE UNDER BED BIN LINED WITH FELT

My personal favorite Lego storage solution is the under bed bin lined with felt. I purchased basic under bed storage bins, bought felt from the craft store, you do want by the yard felt here. And just hot glued the felt into the bins. I didn’t want to put the lids on so I took the felt all the way up and over the edge a little bit.If you want lids on just take the felt up to the edge and not over it.
This bin size gives them space to sort, and keep separate piles in the bins, and store partially built projects. The felt helps cut the noise of sorting, although if you are a LEGO parent you know that noise is never going to go away completely. When they complete a LEGO build and want to display it we have shelves one of my boys installed so they have room to display them. There still has to be parameters around what gets displayed because the space isn’t endless. These bins live in our teenagers room and have lasted five plus years at this point

THE LEGO TABLE BUT ON THE CHEAP

My 2 little boys needed a LEGO storage solution for their room. They have a small walk-in closet, but it’s big enough to put a low LEGO table in there with some bins underneath. We literally just cut down the legs of an old DIY desk to be a “sit on the floor” height, and I got off brand LEGO plates from Dollar Tree. and glued them on. BOOM. When I did this they were still solely playing with Duplo’s, which work great with the LEGO plates. As they grew they have grown into small LEGO play, but with a baby and now toddler in the house, sharing their room for a few months right now, the little LEGO are not going in their room so we still have the DUPLO’s in their room and probably will until the toddler gets her own room. And they play with them 365 days a year. This leads us into the solution for our little boys little LEGO. To see the rest of our little boys room, pre sharing with the toddler it’s over here.

LITTLE LEGO WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS, AND BABIES AND TODDLERS

My little boys, are 19 months apart. They have both been building regular (small) LEGO kits since well before the recommended age on the boxes. When they started I didn’t feel comfortable with them having them in their room upstairs so we stored them in our activity closet downstairs in a ziploc bag. The boys got older, then I got pregnant unexpectedly and there was no way I was going to have tiny LEGO upstairs in their room. So the LEGO stayed downstairs in our activity closet but their collections grew fast and we had to ditch the ziploc bag for a couple of baskets. The downstairs LEGO ONLY get played with at our dining room table. Because toddler life. Some LEGO still make it to the floor but its so much easier to manage in one space. The dining room is not a play space otherwise so the toddler isn’t regularly scouring the floor to find LEGO to choke on lol.

TAKEAWAYS
It’s absolutely possible to have LEGO and not go crazy.
Not all LEGO have to live in the same space.
And having and holding boundaries so your kids learn to keep the LEGO in the spaces you assign is good and healthy!

Now, go buy some LEGO!
Cheers!
